The Alvaro Contreras School in the Ceibita community of San Francisco de Opalaca is seeking funding to provide new desks for its 180 students. This initiative is part of a larger project to construct a new educational module to alleviate overcrowding and improve the learning environment. The Alvaro Contreras School, built in 1986, is currently grappling with deteriorating infrastructure.
Only two out of five classrooms meet minimally acceptable conditions for learning, severely limiting the school’s capacity to provide a suitable educational environment for its 180 students. Overcrowding in the few functional classrooms hinders student engagement and reduces teacher-student interaction, leading to poorer educational outcomes. The aging infrastructure, constructed with materials that may not meet current standards, is further compromised by the region’s harsh weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and low temperatures, accelerating the deterioration. The desks will be built by local community welders, furthering the overall sustainability of this project as it directly impacts the community.
