The Integración Centroamericana school is located in the rural community of El Zancudo in the municipality of Yarula, Honduras. The school provides education needs for kindergarten through 8th grade to 165 students. Students have significant absences from school due to waterborne illnesses. Providing access to safe water within the school system, students will be healthier, have fewer absences due to illness, and be provided a better education. The students, staff and teachers take the water home to their families to help the entire community have clean water. This helps them grow better produce so they are able to eat outside of school hours as well! These families are in living in such deep poverty that the kids typically only eat one meal a day. The school is located in a community that does not have access to safe drinking water and is, unfortunately, vulnerable to waterborne diseases. In previous years the reported cases of children sick with diarrhea have been very high. The community has a water system; however, their water is not constantly treated, allowing harmful bacteria to be present.
